Choosing a garden shed kit online

We have 3 categories of wooden garden shed kits:

1. Cedar Sheds
2. Garden Sheds
3. Shed Kits

Each category represents a different and unique manufacturer's product catalog. All the sheds in each category share certain features that separate them from the other shed categories.

Cedar Sheds are made by Cedarshed Industries, and have the following considerations:
- clear rough beveled old growth cedar siding. Average thickness is about 1/2".
- SPF (spruce, pine, fir) interior studs and flooring.
- mid grade roof shingles
- very simple to assemble with large prefab panels and few loose pieces

Garden Sheds are made by Outdoor Living Today, and are very similar to Cedar Sheds. The difference is the following:
- tight knot, tongue and groove type siding
- veneered plywood between the stud and siding
- all cedar materials including interior studs
- high grade roof shingles
- mostly easy to assemble with similar large prefab panels, but more loose pieces

How to anchor and arbor, pergola, or trellis

There are two very important factors when anchoring your new garden structure to the ground:

1. blocking moisture from the wood or building material to prevent decay.

2. securing the structure safely to prevent collapse.

We suggest pouring a metal anchor into a concrete base for all arbor and pergola installations. That way you solve both concerns: the wood isn't touching the earth and it probably won't fall over!

Another option is using a installation product like the Aussie Augers. But you will need to be sure that your arbor or pergola is compatible...

Sunflower Playhouse Assembly

I built this Sunflower Cedar Playhouse in the backyard for my two boys who are 5 and 3. They just seem to love it everyday!

We had a bit of an unusual site location for the playhouse kit, as I didn't want to take up any flat space in the yard. So, I chose to locate the cedar playhouse on a sloped foundation. I knew that the floor system that is included in the kit would be very strong, so I figured the sloped foundation wouldn't be too difficult to install.

I started by measuring the total floor size. Then I roughly estimated the location of any necesary support beams. Being that the floor is only 6x9 and the back of the playhouse kit was going to rest on the hill, I made a very simple foundation for the sloped site:

You can see the three concrete stepping stones on the right which will support the back of the playhouse. The big plywood against the fence is actually an upside down view of the floor. The rest of layout is similar to a foundation for a deck. I used four 8" sonotubes cut into 24" lengths and buried half in to the ground (after first digging 12" deep holes in the dirt). Then I filled all the sonotubes with concrete. When the concrete was still wet, I placed four Simpson Strong Ties in the center to hold the 4x4 uprights.

Then when the concrete was dry I installed the wood you see in the picture above. None of the work was very difficult because it didn't really matter where the posts or boards were located. I just planned to rest the whole floor on top of the beams when they were level.

Customizing a Shed

All of our shed kits are pre-made items that are inventoried to be exactly the same. This process allows the most customer satisfaction and quickest delivery. However, if you have certain customizing needs we may be able to help you.

Q. What is available?
A. Our Cedar Sheds and Garden Sheds ship to you in panelized sections. In most cases, those sections are all the same size. That means you can interchange doors, wall, and windows. So we can special order a kit to include a different door style, several extra windows, or a any combination of doors and windows. We can not change the shed size.

Q. What does it cost?
A. Typically an extra door or window is $150.

Q. How long will it take?
A. Because we don't stock special order items, your modified kit will have to be packaged at the factory which creates a total lead time of 2-4 weeks.

Shed Kit Siding

We offer three different styles of sheds. Each features a unique type of siding.

Cedar Sheds - this product line uses 1/2x6" rough clear cedar beveled siding. This is a premium siding product that is frequently used in residential applications. It is typically from old growth forests so the siding has very few or no knots at all. No knots (aka "clear") is very desirable because it looks and performs excellent! The siding is then attached directly to the interior 2"x3" wall studs. The siding and studs are then fabricated into pre-built (panelized) sections that the customer assembles.

Garden Sheds - these sheds use a custom 5/8"x6" tight knot cedar shiplap siding. This siding is custom cut at the factory for these sheds specifically. The wood is new growth and comes from the interior of British Columbia, Canada. The siding is then attached to a premium mahogany veneered plywood, that is then attached to the interior 2"x3" stud. The siding and studs are then fabricated into pre-built (panelized) sections that the customer assembles.

Shed Kits - these items provide an excellent value because they are low cost and high quality. There are no prebuilt sections or panels (like the other two styles) keep the costs down low. That's why they are cheaper, but what makes them such good value is the quality of the siding. These shed kits use a product known Shakertown siding. Shakertown consists of multiple high quality, vertical grain, cedar shakes that have been attached to a plywood backing to form a long siding strip. The length of the siding strip will depend on your shed size. 8x12' will have 8' and 12' cedar siding strips.

Foundations

A concrete slab is the ideal foundation for your new shed or gazebo kit. However, it isn't the only option. The most important aspect is a site that is flat and level. Your new shed kit won't look very good if there is any undulations or slope grades underneath your foundation.

The most basic approach is a flat dirt site that can be screed graded with a long 2x4 board to flatten out any bumps. Then use a carpenter's level to check for level. If it is flat and level, get about a dozen concrete stepping stones and space them out every 2-3 feet. Once it looks like this, you can put your floor kit directly onto the stepping stone foundation:

You can also use a bed of crushed rock (3/4" is good) or gravel (pea gravel or road base) if you have an easy way to transport the extra fill material needed. The nice thing about this technique is you can easily rake the material to make it flat and level.

Another option is using railroad ties or similar pressure treated heavy lumber to create a flat and level shed or gazebo kit foundation. The key factor with this material choice is that it will raise the height of your floor quite a bit.

Lastly, you can use a pier block deck foundation if you are covering a large change in slope angle. This method is usually quite expensive.
